One-on-one coaching places you with exclusive contact to Niko Matawalu who will screen and test current ability to provide a higher level of support and customisation in your 1-2-1 sessions enabling you to maximise your potential.
1-2-1 coaching sessions will allow for a higher degree of flexibility for the player and provide opportunity for accelerated growth in key areas of knowledge, skills and rugby ability.
Position-Specific Skills Catered For
One of the key objectives of the Niko Matawalu Academy is to construct a realistic and reliable rugby practice environment for the analysis and subsequent development of individual performance profiles (whatever individual playing positions you play) within rugby union.
Key performance indicators for individual positions (from performance analysis systems from all levels of the game) provide us with the objectivity for us to develop key position specific skill sets in a safe and effective way.
General Rugby-Specific Skills as Standard
At the Niko Matawalu Academy we are all about improving a player decision-making skill set. Our Academy experts understand the various stages of skill acquisition for players at all ages and stages. Developing the basics is in our DNA, but we focus clearly on the needs for the modern player which includes more advanced things under pressure like developing peripheral vision and we will accelerate a player’s development and in turn, their overall game, with performance profiling.
Help You to Develop Strength & Conditioning
Increasing rugby performance and injury prevention are the two key reasons for including strength training within a child’s training programme. Well-designed and well-coached strength training programmes can reduce the risk of injury. When young players strength and conditioning sessions are designed appropriately the players can expect to see strength gains which will enhance athletic performance. Appropriate strength related exercises for our members will include body weight exercises where the player learns to handle his or her body weight during a range of both static and dynamic activities.

Target Specific Needs and Build Greater Confidence
Passing the ball, receiving a pass, catching a high ball, kicking the ball, tackling, lifting in a lineout, and scrummaging are all rugby specific skills that are manipulation and coordination based.
Our industry experts will identify exactly where you are, continue to build on your current strengths and develop your ‘work-on’s’. This will enable any player, at any level, to realise their potential much sooner than one might expect.

Focused, Tailored Sessions
Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) and rugby specific motor skills are the building blocks that rugby-specific skills and athletic competencies are built upon. It’s essential that knowledgeable, highly qualified coaches develop these movement skills for rugby players to have a solid foundation to build individual athleticism into the future.
The components of fitness and athleticism can still, however, be developed concurrently with FMS in younger players and adolescent performers. Prior to the onset of puberty, children can improve in all fitness components. Some key components of fitness for rugby include: • Strength and Power • Speed, Agility, and Endurance • Flexibility and Mobility
At the Niko Matawalu Academy we include all meaningful and relevant exercises and skill acquisition (including rugby and physical education). Involvement in these activities results will lead to greater levels of fitness and movement competence relevant to the players game and position.
Our 1-2-1 sessions will be incrementally advanced using the fundamental movement skills organised in focused, tailored sessions which also include body-weight exercises, and movement circuits relevant to the movement patterns players require during match play. These types of 1-2-1 training sessions can improve the above components of fitness while using FMS and athletic motor skill-based exercises and specific drills. Volume, intensity, type, and frequency of training will depend on the time we have with the young players and their capabilities.
All members will have access to free resources on signing up and discounts for Academy members. 1-2-1 sessions will also be offered to small units and/or groups.
